10 tips for a healthy summer

It’s official – summer is finally here. The sun’s shining and temperatures are soaring.

Cue, the start of BBQs, sunbathing and a well-deserved holiday break. With all the good feels of the summer weather, we know that summer also brings the temptation of ice cream, burgers and generally neglecting diet and exercise.

Luckily APRIL UK have you covered. Here’s our top ten tips for your healthy summer:

    1. Drink plenty of water. Water is your best friend. In the summer months more so than ever, water helps keep your body cool. With high temperatures and humidity levels, it’s necessary to hydrate, even when you’re not thirsty.
    2. Always apply sun cream. If you’re planning to be out in the sun for extended periods of time, reapply sun cream every two to three hours.
    3. With more sun exposure comes more dead skin cells. It’s important to keep your skin smooth and fresh.
    4. Exercise outside. Mix up your exercise regime by working out in the great outdoors. Too often we exercise indoors, so it’s the perfect excuse to get those endorphins in.
    5. Outside swimming is a great way to stay in shape and cool down in the process. A 30 minute session of lengths will burn almost 400 calories.
    6. Maintain a healthy diet. Avoid temptations like ice cream and try some watermelon instead – just as refreshing and unsurprisingly, watermelon is over 90% water. At just 44 calories a cup, there’s no reason not to bite this summery fruit.
    7. Go for a prawn cocktail – great for a mid-afternoon snack, a starter at a meal, or a light lunch, prawns are a high-protein and low-calorie snack to help you feel energised.
    8. Berries – whether they’re red or blue, add some berries to your breakfast and reap the rewards: they help fight cancer, lower blood pressure and keep you mentally sharp. (Best of all, they’re a fresh start to your day). We love this chia berry blast smoothie recipe.
    9. Start a new hobby. With your friends or family, now’s the perfect time to engage in some outdoor activity – why not try gardening, playing outside with your kids or even cooking.
    10. Most importantly, enjoy yourself. The UK isn’t known for its sunshine, make the most of it!
